Municipality approval for building the Proskinitari

July 18, 2007

The municipality of my area approved my idea and i am almost ready to start building the Proskinitari. Using Vue photorealistic software i created the following illustrations for the creation of the Proskinitari.

The Proskinitari is not actually a chapel. Usually it is a small construction resembling to a chapel or a larger scale church. We find them in many places across Greece or Cyprus. At these places passerby can stop, take a breath, make his cross, light the candle make his cross and make a request to the Saint of the icon inside the proskinitari.

Every Proskinitari is devoted to Virgin Mary or to a Saint for an accident or an incident that happened at that spot. Perhaps at that places others lost their lives or some people were saved in a miraculous way.

Reflection 12-13

July 14, 2007

I have had a  a week vacation near the sea. Unfortunately i have missed the last chat session with my colleques and tutors and an attempt to review the chat archives was unsucsesfull. Anyway the summer break will help us to relax but also continue our research and practice with the guidelines why got from our tutors.

I had the opportunity to study at home and during my vacation the books Digital Art Studio (Techniques for Combining Inkjet Printing with traditional Art Materials) – Karin Schminke, Dorothy Simpson Krause and Responsive Environments Architecture, Art and Design – Lucy Bullivant.

Concerning the first book Digital Art Studio i was concentrated in the chapter Gelatin Transfers. This chapter is examining the process of putting digital images on frescolike surfaces. As i have mentioned in previous posts fresco has its origins in Byzantine Art and is a field that i wanted to incorporate in my project. How i will do that?

Well, after finishing the Digital Icons since i have decided firstly to paint digitally the icons i will probably attempt to transfer these prints with the help of an inkjet printer on a frescolike surface with the method of Gelatin Transfer. I will also paint the icons that i have prepared with the traditional way so i will have at the end 16 icons. The 8 will be painted with the traditional technique and the other 8 using digital art methods and an inkjet printer. I have prepared the boards for the 8 icons which are shown below:

Reflection 10-11

July 1, 2007

These weeks have been also very productive for developing the prototype of my project.

A forward email by Andy concerning digital literature aroused my interest and i thought i could conjoin to my project.Concretely Orthodox literature is a very important aspect of Byzantine art. In general literature is a field that always have excited me.

So i have been exploring ways so that digital literature can be used for my project.

I have decided to create a new website that will be related to my project and it will be the second link for interactivity apart Second life creation.

The third link for interactivity would be the real proskinitari that hopefully will be built in my neighbourhood park. The municipality council of my area still didn’t decide on my proposal and i am waiting for an answer this month.

The digital narrative webpage that i will create along with Second Life creation will assist the engagement of a viewer of digital narrative  or Second Life with my project.

How it will be possible?……
